Keeping Your Coffee Table Looking Like New!

If you’re somebody who doesn’t like to spend a whole lot of time repairing and detailing furniture, then you have probably resigned yourself to the thought that you must only indulge in the cheapest of plastic furniture. Fortunately, this is not necessarily true. There are easy ways to prevent your furniture from even needing repairs.

Most people have wooden coffee tables.  If this is the case, then over time you may start to see light colored rings scattered around, usually about the same diameter as your favorite drinking glass.  This happens because you have most likely failed to use a drink coaster while enjoying an iced drink. Beverage coasters come in many designs; you can also get personalized coasters.

When your table has gotten to this point, there is nothing you can do but to sand the wood and refinish it.  If you don’t mind your new table top design then leaving it won’t hurt anything, but eventually, with prolonged disuse of coasters, the finish that came with the table will begin to bubble up, and if moisture manages to soak into the actual wood of the table it will begin to buckle and rot.

One type of coaster that has been rising in popularity is Thirstystone coasters. “What? Stones aren’t absorbent!” But stone coasters are made of magic. Okay, maybe they’re just drink coasters…but they are made of sandstone which actually is very absorbent.

Maybe you refuse to use coasters because you’re afraid they will disrupt the ambience of your living room. A stack of round cork discs will look tacky and out of place, so instead you use TV guides and magazines that would already be sitting, inconspicuously, on your table anyway.

Unfortunately, magazines just aren’t very absorbent.  Your beverage will leave a puddle of condensation on the cover of the magazine, just waiting to dribble onto your table top or possibly your carpet.

Lucky for you, there are many differently themed coaster sets out there. You can find a coaster set that will tickle your every fancy; even a glass coaster set that will match with a glass coffee table.

You may think that a glass coffee table does not require the use of coasters. You may also think that the voices are trying to tell you things. If you don’t use coasters, the liquid will have no place to go; the glass will not soak it up, so the liquid will just sit there, waiting to submerge your favorite book.

Coasters are the first step towards preventative care for your furniture. If you are really adamant about keeping your coffee table until the end of time, you might want to try refinishing it every few months, or some other predetermined amount of time.

Do yourself a favor, and don’t get boring, thin, useless, plain cork coasters. Having a themed coaster set will encourage you and everybody else to use them because, lets face it, they’re just more fun.
